XTremeData's Q1 2008 Newsletter is publicly available. It's marketing material, but it's worth skimming.

Much more interesting is their "VLDB Analytics Appliance" document that covers the what, why, when and how of the XTremeData appliance. It's unfortunately accessible only after registering on their site, but it's well worth it.

Anybody have anything else?

This morning, Google Alerts pointed me to this article about XTremeData, a VLDB developer cum hardware company that is developing (yet another) Postgres-based data warehousing appliance.

I find XDI's general concept very cool, if only because it's one of the few databases I can think of that is predicated on a specialized hardware/software combination (Netezza being the only other one that comes to mind, in fact). But I can't help but wonder if they aren't going to shoot themselves in the foot by making the FPGA accelerator publicly available. Why?

Netezza, who they are ostensibly going after, relies heavily on FPGAs, and I for one think they're moving to blades. How much easier would that move be if they could put an FPGA on a blade? Never mind easier, how much more efficient - both in terms of query performance and energy consumption - might that product be?

Mature, proven MPP DBMS software on commodity systems with open hardware acceleration... tell me how you're gonna beat that.
